Middle East Escalates: Iran Fires Missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain, US Strikes Qeshm Island
Tensions in the Middle East reached a dangerous new peak this week after Iran fired ballistic missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain, marking one of the most direct military confrontations in the region in years.
According to the US Central Command, two of the missiles aimed at Kuwait failed in flight and fell short, while those directed at Bahrain were intercepted before reaching their targets. Despite the interceptions, Kuwait declared a state of emergency and suspended all commercial flights after a separate wave of drone strikes caused significant damage to Kuwait International Airport.
The United States responded by striking an Iranian military facility on Qeshm Island, in what officials described as a targeted defensive action. The strike, carried out by US forces in the region, was intended to degrade Iran's capacity for further launches.
Black smoke was also seen rising over St. Petersburg, Russia, after a Ukrainian drone struck an oil terminal in the city — an attack timed days before President Vladimir Putin was due to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, adding a second flashpoint to an already volatile global security picture.
International calls for de-escalation have intensified, with the United Nations Security Council convening an emergency session. Oil markets reacted sharply, though prices eased slightly on reports of progress in diplomatic back-channels aimed at containing the situation.
